Is Hypnotherapy Good for ADHD?
A calmer mind, more focus—and a fresh way forward

What Is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) affects around 800,000 Australians. It can make things like focusing, staying organised, managing time, or following through with tasks really tough.

It’s not just about being "distracted"—it can affect confidence, work, relationships, and even self-esteem.

So… What Is Hypnotherapy Exactly?
Think of it like guided daydreaming.

Hypnotherapy gently guides you into a deeply relaxed, focused state (but you're still awake and in control). In that state, your mind is more open to helpful suggestions and strategies—so you can shift unhelpful patterns and build new habits.

Can People with ADHD Be Hypnotised?
Absolutely.
It might take a little longer to settle into the relaxed state—but with the right approach, it works beautifully.
In fact, the focused nature of hypnosis can actually feel soothing for a busy mind.

How Are Sessions Modified for ADHD?
Every session is adapted to work with your brain, not against it. For clients with ADHD, that might mean shorter bursts of guided focus, more interactive dialogue, or breaking down ideas into smaller, doable steps. Strategic psychotherapy adds structure, so you're not just being asked to “relax,” but gently guided through targeted problem-solving. I also make space for movement, fidgeting, and mental rest when needed—because ADHD brains thrive when we work with their natural rhythm, not try to force them into one.

What Should I Know Before Starting?
-
Check in with your GP: Make sure hypnotherapy fits into your broader care plan. I’ll also chat with you about what you want to achieve and make sure the process feels right for you.
-
Be Consistent: Just like any therapy, results come from regular sessions and a willingness to practise the tools outside of our time together.
-
Works Well With Other Support: Hypnotherapy can complement ADHD medication, coaching, or other forms of therapy. We’re not replacing what works—we’re adding another layer of support.

If ADHD makes everyday life feel harder than it should… if you’re tired of running on empty, and ready to try something new—hypnotherapy could be the gentle shift you’ve been waiting for.

No judgement. No pressure. Just a space to reset, refocus, and reconnect with the version of you that’s capable, calm, and clear.

Curious? I offer a free 30-minute check-in to talk through your needs and answer any questions. ADHD can be loud—but healing doesn’t have to be.

WHERE'S THE EVIDENCE?
Maarit Virta, PhD, from The Institute of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Helsinki, has conducted studies examining the efficacy of hypnotherapy for ADHD. Her research focused on evaluating the impact of hypnotherapy on ADHD symptoms and associated impairments.

In her studies, Virta investigated how hypnotherapy interventions could benefit individuals with ADHD in various areas, including attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Through rigorous research methodologies, including randomised controlled trials, Virta and her team assessed the effectiveness of hypnotherapy as a complementary treatment for ADHD.

The outcomes of Virta's research demonstrated promising results. She found that hypnotherapy interventions led to significant improvements in ADHD symptoms, such as attention difficulties, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Additionally, hypnotherapy was shown to enhance self-regulation skills and improve overall functioning in individuals with ADHD.

In another study, Hypnosis was compared against CBT. The 2 approaches had similar results, but at the 6 month check up, those who had been treated with hypnotherapy appeared to outperform those who'd gone through CBT.
